The Team

Abba has gathered a unique team from different backgrounds, cultures, giftings, experiences, and generations. Take a moment to read a little about the people who seek the Father's heart on Abba's mountain. Our motto is:

The Kingdom of God is preaching the Gospel and cutting grass.
Everything is important. Everything is kingdom work.

Jason & Sarah Smith - Directors

Jason, a Louisiana boy, and Sarah, a Honduran daughter of missionaries, met and chose deep love for each other while attending college in New Orleans. "We were married in June of 2006 and a few days after our honeymoon were asked to go to Costa Rica for one year to manage the construction project of Refugio Solté. With nothing tying us down, we set off for a one year jungle adventure, not knowing that 10+ years later the adventure would still be unfolding. God added two wild blessings to our story, our sons Luka (2009) and Niko (2011). Together we direct the happenings of Refugio Solté, seeking daily what God's plans are for His mountain and following after what He is already doing. We consider it an honor to be a part of what God is moving in so many lives, investing encouragement and the truth of Christ into people we encounter. He is worthy of it all! If there is any way we can bless or serve you, please feel free to contact us." Click HERE to donate to the Smith family.

Sam & Martie Beck - coordinator of Transportation & logistics

Embracing the knowledge that age is just a number, Sam and Martie would be considered non-traditional missionaries as they joined the Refugio family in their late 50’s. Married for 30 years, they are the parents of 4 sons, 3 daughter in laws and 7 grandchildren. Rather than sit back and enjoy the “golden years” of retirement in their home state of Idaho, they opted to sell everything and move to Costa Rica to join the Smith family in the day to day operation of Refugio Solte.  Sam will take on the position of Missions Transportation & Logistics Coordinator and First Aid along with assisting the Maintenance Coordinator.  Martie will fill in as needed while she teaches full time at Uvita Christian Academy. Sam has enjoyed a long career in banking and asset recovery and is looking forward to the challenge of coordinating transportation for teams coming into Refugio Solte. As the Becks step out in faith they are taking God at His word, to be strong and courageous, not be afraid, not be discouraged, and remember that the Lord our God is with us wherever we go (Joshua 1:9). The Becks hope that others will be encouraged to step out in faith and step into their calling regardless of age. Click HERE to donate to the Beck Family.

Jay grooters - coordinator of Maintenance

Amy Grooters - administration & Finance

Jay and Amy like to say they answered the call to full time missions for the “second half” of life.  Jay enjoyed a career of 20 years in the field of real estate investments and 6 years of owning and operating a beautiful resort in northern Wisconsin.  Amy’s giftedness and career have always been focused in the areas of accounting and business administration.  Their plans were all set for the “good life” and early retirement, then God called them to “follow me” into full time missions.

Jay and Amy followed God’s call to join the Refugio Solté family and ministry in November of 2017, and consider it a blessing beyond measure to serve the local church, pastors and future leaders through the ministry of Refugio Solté.  Prior to God clearly leading Jay and Amy to Refugio Solté, they served God’s greater kingdom in Costa Rica as full time missionaries since 2015, with their ministry focused in the area of equipping the local church by provide training in the areas of micro economic development, stewardship and personal finances.

Jay and Amy have two beautiful daughters:  Jaci, also serving the Lord in Costa Rica, and Kylie, following the Lord in the US. Click HERE to donate to the Grooters Family.
