Often during each year, specific needs arise at Refugio Solté that require more hands on deck than the hands we actually have on deck. Because our team is small and the grounds are big, there is a never-ending to-do list that needs tackling. There are plenty of opportunities for those who want to come lend a helping hand. Some projects require specific skills, while others need little more than willingness to get down and dirty. The projects shift from year to year but the following are areas that we consistently work on developing or improving.
Creating sustainable ministry
Our goal is to source what we use at the Refuge as much as we can from the land.
Projects that need maintenance or development are:
- vegetable and herb garden
- bee hives/honey production
- aquaponic agricultural system
- Hydropower generator
- Cocoa grove
Refugio Solté is located in the heart of a tropical rainforest, and also gets its fair share of salty sea air. Needless to say, the elements are harsh and take a consistent toll on the grounds and buildings. Help in any of these areas is always welcome.
- Woodwork – fixing windows and doors, furniture, etc.
- Plumbing – sinks, bathrooms, main waterlines and river water source
- Deep cleaning – kitchen, guest rooms, main community areas, laundry, etc.
- Cutting grass
- Maintaining pathways
- General maintenance
- shoveling problematic areas
- adding rock material
- blowing leaves and debris
- Pavement project:
we are currently organizing a campaign to pave the most problematic portions of the road. This project will be carried out in several stages and we need help with the grunt work, helpers in the kitchen to feed the grunt workers, and help fundraising for the materials and engineering necessary to carry this project out. If you or your friends, church or business are interested in participating in this project, whether by fundraising or putting together a team to carry out one or more of the stages, please feel free to contact us.
Missions trips to Refugio Solté do not consist only of completing projects. It is our vision and heart to integrate as much time of Bible study, reflection and worship as possible. While we are intentional in completing the project goals that are set with each team, we are just as intentional in providing a time of retreat in which team members can grow in intimacy with the Lord and be renewed. We see it as a two-fold ministry; people coming to bless what God is doing at Refugio Solté, and God blessing those people with what He is doing at Refugio Solté.
